Windows Server 2012 R2 Not Booting in Safe Mode

We all know that sometimes system gives a lot of headache if some thing goes wrong. I had similar problem few days back when my Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 stuck at booting stage while attempting to start it in Safe Mode. I managed to solve this problem. Read more for details and please share if you liked it.

THE REAL PROBLEM

Here is what I did.

1. I opened msconfig by pressing Windows + R and then typed "msconfig".

2. Then choosing below options in the pop-up window. I selected Safe boot and Minimal.

3. Then I pressed shift and restart.

4. When the system restarted it stuck at finishing booting at the stage as shown below. It kept going back to the very beginning and again stuck at the same point.

SOLUTION:

Now how to solve this problem. I have figured it out by attempting several things. All you have to do is to follow below steps.

  1. On server reboot press SHIFT + F8. You will get below option. Select Troubeshoot. (please do check your default keys. It might be different for your Server. It depends on server type. It could be different if you have DELL Server. In my case I have HP DL360.)

        2. Then select Command Prompt

        3. Now choose your account. Select local administrator account.

        4. Enter password for your local administrator account. Click Continue.

        5. Now command prompt will open.

        6. Now type this command bcdedit /deletevalue default safeboot (if this command doesn't work
for you then replace "default" with "current"). Once successful restart your server. Now your
            Server will open normally.

Hope that this resolves your issue. This is one of the troubleshooting method. I am sure that this will work if your server stuck at booting stage in safe mode. However there are some common tips that one must remember. Never forget passwords for your local administrator and domain administrator. Take regular backups of your systems. Always make sure all necessary precautions you have in place so that if something goes wrong you can rectify the problem. Do not just try something on live environment, if you are unsure about anything either consult someone who has a lot of experience in dealing with such systems or research well on the internet. If you have these basics available, command prompt is yet a very powerful tool for troubleshooting purposes.
