WiFi Connectivity - No internet - Possible Channel Overlap

Hi, dear readers and followers of my blogs. I have created a blog earlier on Wifi connectivity issues. In that blog, I have highlighted some issues that are very basic for the professionals and are written for the dummies, non-IT home users, or beginners of networking. This blog is about an advanced level problem that you may come across in any corporate environment or possibly at home as well. The scenario of this particular problem could be different. This type of issue occurs when there is more than one internet connection or Wi-Fi connection in the work facility or your home.

If you troubleshoot your WiFi with all of the mentioned steps in my earlier blog and still find internet connection or simply saying Wi-Fi connectivity, which normally is the preferred method of internet connectivity nowadays, I am going to tell you a very easy way to rectify the problem. If your Wi-Fi connection shows that the internet is connected and very slow browsing speed. Even sometimes after experiencing slow browsing speed, your internet connection would disconnect. This is so frustrating because you have already done all the basic troubleshooting but the problem still exists. This could also happen even if you change the Modem or Access Point. At that point, one can become easily frustrated and stressed but you will feel extremely pleased to know that solution to this problem is far easier as compared to the nature of the problem itself.

Here is what really happens.

First of all download any app from Play Store on your mobile device named WiFi Analyzer

There are many apps available on the Play Store you can make a choice of your own.
After downloading the app open it and it will display the Channel Graph of available WiFi connections in your surroundings.
See image below

These conic shapes in the graph are WiFi connections shown with different colors so that it is easy to distinguish between them. The higher the conic shape higher the signal strength will be. The scale on the horizontal axis shows the channel number, for example, the channel number of WiFi colored in Red is 1, for green, it is 5, for blue it's 8, and so on. In other words, we can say that the channel number is the vertical line that bisects the conic shape in two equal halves and it touches the peak of the conic shape of any particular WiFi connection.

The important thing to keep in mind is that all 2.4GHz Signals would display WiFi connections in the same window but if it is 5GHz then one will have to select 5GHz to see the WiFi connections with this frequency range.

Where Does The Problem Lie:

If you see the graph, the blue colored conic shapes overlap for three different WiFi's. Here the actual problem is when two or more WiFi connections are on the same channel number. It does not happen with configuration but most devices have default settings on specific channel numbers.

In order to resolve this, go to your modem configuration page and locate WiFi Settings. Now against your WiFi connection name (which has the connectivity issue) or the SSID, by looking at the graph on your phone change the channel number to the value which is free i.e. the channel number where there is no other graph such as 14.

Other Features of WiFi Analyzer:

There are some other features of these App's such as a metered shaped icon on the top right of the app displays information such as channel numbers, frequency in megahertz, security types, their MAC addresses, and signals strength in dBm. Most importantly it does not need any configuration to fetch all this data for you. All you need is to stay connected with any of the available WiFi connections. I cannot post any image here to show you how it looks as it violates the security policy and exposes the internet connection to intruders.

The nature of troubleshooting is totally safe because it just allows the channel numbers to be altered. For your information and satisfaction, this method is practiced and tested successfully. After trying this fix hope that your WiFi connection is fixed and it has increased your troubleshooting skills. Please follow my blogs for informative resources like this. Thanks
